My ohana includes Hashimoto’s from the beautiful islands of Hawaii. My great great grandfather immigrated to the nation of Hawaii as one of the gannenmono under the name Hashimoto. His sons spread to the four major islands including my dad’s Maui home in Hana🌺. Growing up in North Carolina, I loved having Hawaiian roots and names connected to the islands, but for many people, Hashimoto inhabits an entirely different meaning.
Dr. Haruku Hashimoto first described what we now call Hashimoto’s Disease and published a monograph in 1912. During the recent Patients as Partners conference, I was reminded how many people are impacted by Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Sharing clinical research as a care option resources is the very least I can do for friends and community members who might have need now or in the future.
